Why RAG?

Large Language Models (LLMs) are powerful, but they have three major limitations. RAG directly addresses each of them.

Limitation 1: Hallucinations

LLMs generate plausible‑sounding but incorrect information. Without real facts, they make things up. RAG provides factual context, so the model has something to base its answer on, dramatically reducing hallucinations.

Limitation 2: Knowledge Cutoff

LLMs are trained on data up to a certain date. Ask about recent events (e.g., "Who won the latest election?") and they may not know. RAG can retrieve up‑to‑date documents from the web or a live database, making the model current.

Limitation 3: No Access to Private Data

LLMs have never seen your internal documents, emails, or codebase. RAG bridges this gap: you index your private data, and the model retrieves relevant pieces before answering. This enables secure, domain‑specific Q&A.

Additional Benefits

  • Cost‑effective: No need to fine‑tune or retrain large models.
  • Transparent: You can show which documents were used as evidence.
  • Modular: Swap the retrieval source or LLM without rebuilding everything.

Two Minute Drill
  • RAG solves hallucinations, knowledge cutoff, and private data access.
  • Retrieval provides factual grounding.
  • No retraining needed; update the knowledge base instead.
  • Enables transparent, auditable answers.
