What is a Prompt?
Imagine you have a very smart friend who knows almost everything, but they only speak when you ask a question. The way you ask – the words you choose, the details you give – changes what they say back. That "question" or "instruction" you give is called a prompt.
In the world of AI, a prompt is the text you type into a language model (like ChatGPT) to get a response. It can be a question, a command, a sentence to complete, or even just a few words. The AI reads your prompt, processes it, and generates an answer.
A prompt is the input you give to an LLM to get a desired output. It is your way of communicating with the AI.
Simple Example
User prompt: "What is the capital of France?"
AI answer: "The capital of France is Paris."Prompts Can Be Short or Long
Short prompt: "Write a haiku about spring."
Long prompt: "You are a professional poet. Write a haiku about spring, using words like cherry blossoms and warm breeze. Keep it 5-7-5 syllables."
The longer, more detailed prompt often gives a better result.
Why the Same Prompt Can Give Different Answers
LLMs are not deterministic – they have a "temperature" setting. If you ask the same question twice, you might get slightly different wording. That is normal. Prompt engineering helps you get consistent, reliable answers.
Two Minute Drill
- A prompt is the input you give to an AI language model.
- The way you phrase a prompt affects the quality of the answer.
- Prompts can be short questions or detailed instructions.
- Different runs may produce slightly different results – that's normal.
