Maieutic Prompting
Sometimes the AI gives an answer that sounds correct but contains hidden contradictions. Maieutic prompting (from the Greek word for midwifery) asks the model to explain itself in different ways and then resolve any contradictions. It helps surface and fix logical flaws.
Maieutic prompting = generate multiple explanations, identify contradictions, and reconcile them.
How It Works
1. Ask the model a question and get an initial answer.
2. Ask follow‑up questions that probe different aspects of the answer (e.g., "Why do you think that?", "What if the opposite were true?").
3. Collect the model’s reasoning paths.
4. Identify contradictions between them.
5. Ask the model to resolve the contradictions (e.g., "You said X earlier, but now you say Y. Which is correct? Explain.")
6. Produce a final, consistent answer.
Example
Question: "Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?"
Explanation 1: Botanically, it’s a fruit because it develops from a flower.
Explanation 2: Culinary, it’s a vegetable because it’s used in salads.
Contradiction: The answer depends on context.
Resolution: "A tomato is botanically a fruit but commonly treated as a vegetable in cooking."

Limitations
Maieutic prompting requires multiple interactions and can be time‑consuming. It is most useful for high‑stakes reasoning tasks, not everyday questions.
