What is Prompt Engineering?

Prompt engineering is the art and science of crafting inputs (prompts) to get the desired output from a language model. A well‑written prompt can be the difference between a vague, useless answer and a precise, insightful one.

Prompt engineering is designing the input to an LLM to reliably produce the desired output.

Why Is Prompt Engineering Necessary?

LLMs are not databases; they are next‑word predictors. How you phrase your request heavily influences the result. Without good prompts, models may hallucinate, give irrelevant answers, or miss nuances.

A Simple Example

Bad prompt: "Tell me about cars."
Good prompt: "Explain the difference between electric and hybrid cars in three bullet points, for a beginner."
The second prompt specifies format, audience, and scope.

Core Components of a Good Prompt

  • Instruction: What you want the model to do.
  • Context: Background information (optional).
  • Input data: The question or text to process.
  • Output format indicator: Specify JSON, list, table, etc.

Prompt Templates

For repetitive tasks, define a template with placeholders.
System: You are a helpful assistant that answers in JSON.
User: Extract the main ingredients from this recipe: {{recipe}}
